DISCOGRAPHY OF EAST AFRICAN MUSIC
Part 2: POLYGRAM (Kenya)
& classic Congolese reissues on ASLP

Part 2. POLYGRAM's POLYDOR label, Nairobi.

Polygram, created by the Dutch Philips company, is a classic example of a multinational company. After a merger with Deutsche Grammophon in 1962 they opened plants in many countries and began issuing albums in Kenya before 1976, possibly as early as 1971 when Philips Kenya were still releasing albums with the Philips (K) prefix. Some were also issued on cassette. Of course tape piracy is one of the huge problems in African music distribution. "Polygram Records Ltd., estimates the total cassette market at 2.5 million per year, of which 90 percent is pirated. Most videotapes in Kenya are also pirated." (from a 1993 report on Economic Practices in Kenya)

Writing about Kenyan music in The Beat, Summer 1986, Doug Paterson said, "There are a few other bands with Swahili-language repertoires (for example, Maroon Commandos and the Mombasa-based tourist bands) but, on the recording scene, most of the remaining Swahili music is Tanzanian in origin. Polydor is still releasing collections of the late Mbaraka Mwinshehe's recordings seven years after his death. In the past, Tanzanian bands such as Mlimani Park, Safari Sound International, and Vijana Jazz were the major concern of Polydor and AIT [Andrews International and Teal]'s local production efforts. Today, although these labels have very little to do with the Tanzanian groups, there is a fairly good selection of such music available in Nairobi from independent labels (such as Ahadi)."

Polygram (Kenya), did not own their pressing plant. According to Doug Paterson, they sold out around 1993 to a company called Black Cat, which later became Tamasha of Nairobi. Tamasha reissued some of the catalogue on CD.

Discs numbered below POLP200 appear to be mostly Nigerian, so I have omitted them. Once again, I leaned heavily on Prof Endo's site for a start. Thanks again to Doug Paterson, and to Cheeku Bidani, Barry Eisenberg, Paul Johnston, Juan Carlos Mercado Rios, Peter Toll, Ronald Zee, Tim Clifford & Nick Dean of NATARI.

See also Doug's own Polygram discography.

[DP]; The death of Tanzanian guitarist/bandleader Mbaraka Mwinshehe, following an automobile accident in 1979, was a major tragedy for East African dance music. A self-taught guitarist, Mwinshehe played kwela music with Cuban Branch Jazz as a teenager. He modeled his singing after Salim Abdullah, a founder of Morogoro Jazz who went on to form the Cuban Marimba Band. Starting out with Morogoro Jazz (1964-73), Mwinshehe led his own band, Super Volcano, from 1973 until his untimely death six years later.

[Paul Johnston] Liner notes: KUSEMA NA KUFANYA
Habel Kifoto was born in Taita District Coast Province and started his music career back in 60s. Kifoto started playing bass guitar in 1967 until when he started his skill in Solo lead guitar.
After 3 years with his former band Kifoto and a few others formed the Maroon Commandos and were based in Gilgil. Early 1971 Maroon Commandos found their [way] to (Phonogram) Polygram Studios and recorded two records, led by Habel Kifoto Maroon Commandos' first record Emily composed by Kifoto hinmself fought its way through to number [one] in the Top Ten List. It wasn't all that easy for the group to hit the charts but somehow they managed although this way the time Jamhuri Jazz Band and Morogoro Band were really shooting high. After their success in 1971 Maroon Commandos continued travelling and that's entertaining people all over the country.
Sometimes in 1972 while travelling up country their car overturned and claimed several lives of their members. Between 1972 the time of the accident and 1977 nothing much of Maroon was heard. So Polygram Artists and Musicians department visited them at their Camp in Langata and the Band leader replied as he was asked Have you any intentions of re-appearing back in recording business after dropping for almost 5 years? We are reappearing back very soon and I'm sorry he didn't elaborate but promised to announce the department by action. As it is their motto.
Kusema na kufanya i.e. Action Speaks more than words. So our fans shouldn't worry we are returning before long. After that horrible tragedy which stuck us. And so they did come back with Mama yu Wapi which sold quite well followed by Charonyi ni Wasi a real Million Seller. Charonyi ni Wasi really cemented their ability. Habel Kifoto as a leader handles a variety of musical instructions i.e. Bass guitar, Solo guitar, Saxophone and very much at home with the key board very popular for his meaningful compositions.

LP: Polydor; D.O. Misiani is not on this recording. His absence from this, Rose Atieno (Polydor POLP 580) and Benga Beat (World Circuit WCB 003) is apparently not due to any disagreement with Shirati Jazz. Doug Paterson writes, "about Benga Beat, recorded in the UK:...The Kenyans wouldn't give him a passport claiming he was Tanzanian. I don't think there was any problem between Misiani and his band and they couldn't have called it Shirati without Misiani's permission. Otherwise, you would have seen Shirati Stars or Les Shirati or something like that. It might have been that Misiani was mad at Polygram about something or it might be that he just wanted to let his musicians publish some of their own songs. All the songs on the two LPs are by the sidemen, not Misiani..."
